What are the important steps and considerations someone must keep in mind when acquiring an International Driver's Permit (IDP) for travel to the USA? Share your experiences (if any) with using IDPs while driving abroad.
United States
I believe it depends on the country you're coming from, as some countries seem to require that you have a drivers license or permit to drive in your home country first before you can even apply. To apply and receive an IDP, you need to first reach out to the motor vehicle department of the country that issued your driver's license.

The good news, is that not every state requires one of these permits, so you will have to contact the state department of motor vehicles of the state you plan to visit. You must also apply and get this permit before you travel to the states.

Essentially the work must be done before you travel out to the US. So you need to have a license in your home country and also establish an IDP in your country before the travel process ever begins. The IDP was established by the United Nations as a sort of universal way to help people travel overseas and in other countries. I believe it's much the same as if you were a US citizen traveling and driving in another country.
To acquire an International Driver's Permit (IDP) for travel to the USA, you must:
  1. Check if your country is a signatory to the Geneva or Vienna Conventions.
  2. Visit the designated authority in your country to apply.
  3. Submit required documents, including your valid driver's license, passport-sized photos, and application fee.
  4. Receive your IDP once approved.
