Business owners, developers and residents who are in downtown New Bern will need to be aware of the significant shift in parking ordinances. An amendment to the city's parking ordinance for downtown establishments was recently passed by The New Bern Board of Aldermen.

The move was initiated after it had been discovered that parking standards had been applied incorrectly in the historic downtown area from 2017 to 2022.

Prior to these dates, zoning approvals had been part of the building permit process. Business owners will now need to secure an independent zoning permit before they are able to obtain a building permit.

The amendment will also seek to expand the central retail core, which right now is exempt from parking requirements. This will be done to include more areas of downtown New Bern. Something to be aware of is that the approved amendment does exclude short-term rentals from parking exemptions and excludes the convention center from the central retail core boundary.
