False alarms are bogging down emergency services

It isn't a requirement where I live. I'm glad because goodness knows we pay enough in permit fees already. I wouldn't mind having the alarms tracked, but it makes more sense to charge those who have too many false alarms, rather than to create a blanket charge by permitting each device.

    Appeals process for permit denials

What happens next depends on which agency sent the denial for us. Luckily, they all make it super simple to appeal by including all the information about the process right on the denial letter. It couldn't be more clear in my jurisdiction.

    Hiring freeze affects on permitting

I believe that permits are being delayed for many reasons, and not all the blame should fall on Trump. For example, I live in a rural area. I've read in the paper that we're facing staffing shortages, which have led to delays, but I believe that's because few people want to settle here...

    Express Permits

In this situation it makes perfect sense to streamline the process. Most of the major issues are found and fixed during the septic tank's initial installation, so there's no need to go through a detailed permit again. I wish more permits were set up this way!

Permit Techs: What is your workspace like?

Gosh, it must be frustrating to be cut off from the rest of your team, @Emily C. Is there no better way to set things up? I'd come up with a few ideas and present them to the boss, if you think there's a better floor plan/design that could make things easier and more productive. It can't hurt...

    Planning Code Violations and Fees

In my municipality, homeowners and businessowners are given the chance to get everything up to code by a certain date. If they fail to follow through, that's when the fines hit. The fines increase every so often until they're compliant.

Article Spring Transitions – Bat Reminders & Updates

Thanks for the reminder! The fines around here for disturbing a protected species are incredibly high, so it's worth taking extra precautions to remain on the right side of the law.

    Changes In Permitting Processes?

I'm not sure. I doubt that he even knows, really. His administration seems more concerned with removing rules and regulations, rather than creating new ones, so maybe he'll take that route.

    Roadside selling in TN

We took a vacation to Gatlinburg and along the way I noticed tons of sellers hawking homegrown fruits and vegetables. I asked about their permit process, and it turns out they don't need one. It's legal to sell your homegrown produce in the state. This means there's a low barrier to entry to...

Article Heat Illness and Injury Prevention Rulemaking

I had no idea that many people died of heat injuries every year. I imagine that many of them are vulnerable migrant workers. Hopefully, the new rule will be finalized, so we can prevent future deaths.

    Mold remediation permit?

It's puzzling that the politicians haven't enacted strict remediation laws. It's just not what I'd expect from a state that requires Proposition 65 Warnings on so many of our nation's consumer goods. I wonder if you might need to file a permit under an air pollution code or something like that?

What do you wish you knew

That's a great question, Emily C! I wish more DIYers considered the possible hazards involved in their project as part of their planning process. Some homes contain lead, others have asbestos, and so on. It's not a good idea to just go around knocking walls down. I wish my local government...

    Newly Incorporated Towns

To the best of my knowledge, most building codes are created and adopted at the state level, and those must be followed whether a city creates additional codes or not. So, it's not like the people wouldn't have some protections already in place. As such, I could see the creation of additional...

Filmmakers claim park permitting system is unconstitutional

Two filmmakers, Alexander Rienzie and Connor Burkesmith, initiated a lawsuit to challenge the legality of the National Park Service permit-and-fee system. Their lawsuit claims that it's unconstitutional, among other things. The filmmakers initiated the claim after they were denied a filming...

    Permit for temporary amusement ride

You've helped me out so many times on this forum, mantis, that I'd love to be able to pay it back. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find an exact answer. This article states that the new requirements only relate to permanent amusement rides, whereas yours is temporary. I wonder if the...

Celebrating the New Year in Hawaii?

I wonder if that law in Hawaii is really enforced, though. I say that because technically fireworks are illegal in my city. They're illegal to own, illegal to buy, and illegal to set off. That hasn't stopped anyone from buying and selling them, though. Firecrackers are a staple for most...

Sister Wives stars and their farm permit saga

Don't judge me, but I'm a fan of reality television. I especially like TLC's Sister Wives. So, I've been closely following Maddie's blog about Taeda Farms, which she's opening with her mother, Janelle. It's been interesting to see them grapple with permitting issues. I'm sure many of us...

    Tricky situation with permit

I talked things over with my neighbor and we agreed to take the advice given here. I called the city to let them know that I made the mistake and the inspector is coming out to see where we're at with the project and what might need to be undone for a thorough inspection. Hopefully we didn't...
