Going up the ladder as a permit tech

I'm the only permit tech in my jurisdiction, but that's not my title. I'm sort of struggling with the same thing you are, OP. If there's no other me, there's no way for me to move up because who would do my job? There are definite pros and cons.

    Telework

Hi Eric, My current jurisdiction is work at work - working from home is hard to get approved. Honestly, I prefer working in the office, but maybe it's because my house isn't set up for it?? I don't know. At any rate, when I did work from during the early months of COVID, it was nice not paying...

Hey! We have a Certificate of Occupancy, not completion....I'd be happy to email you a template if that's similar to what you're looking for?

    SB 5290

Hello fellow Washingtonians! Who is going to be implementing SB 5290 at the top of the year? My jurisdiction will be, and we are hoping the software we have will assist us with timelines. One step further - who has Tyler and is implementing 5290? We are trying to find a work around for not being...

Going live with new software tomorrow

It's going ok. I had a really really great implementation specialist whom I could call on anytime for help. We did not convert our data from our old system and apparently that's a good thing. We did testing and training but there's just nothing like the live version. It is a good idea to "test"...

    Tips for supervisors?

Get to know your people, and don't micromanage them. Trust that they know what they're doing, and be approachable so they're not afraid to ask you if they don't.

Hello fellow Washingtonian! :) Good to see you here. How is your jurisdiction handling the upcoming timeline changes w/ SB 5290?

What is your building permit turn-around time?

6-8 weeks here for building permits. Our plans reviewer is also our building official, inspector, and fire marshal, so most people give grace.

    Solar Refund

If there was plan review done, those fees likely wouldn't be refunded. What is included in the $150? Make sure you get the request in writing. :)

    Gifts to permitting staff

All food is shared. One of my clients gave me a plant when her permit was under plan review because she was super appreciative of all the help I gave her.. it stays at the office though for everyone to enjoy.

Going live with new software tomorrow

Tomorrow morning my jurisdiction is going live with Tyler Tech, aka Enterprise Permitting & Licensing. Any words of advice? Any "jeez, I wish I would have known this at go live time" that you can share? Our jurisdiction is small, there were two of us who built the system on the backend....so I'm...

    GPT Washington State Building Codes

I use it to help me with some materials in my WABO plan reviewer course, if I need to know what chapter references something. I am thankful for this as a resource!!

    Word of caution on RTIs

Yes! I have to tell people all the time that they can't start work until I give them the permit; just because the fees are paid doesn't mean they're good to go!

What online permitting systems do you use?

How is it going? how long have you used it? We are going live in a couple weeks and I'm losing my mind.

Should pre-submittal meetings be required for all major building permits?

We do that for land use proposals, the applicant pays a fee and applies and then staff reviews and will meet with the applicant to talk feasibility and let them know what will be needed to continue. For bldg permits, I think it would be nice, but if it's a "major" project it's likely gone...

Do you seal your building permits?

Do you mean when they're issued? In that case - no. We email them, and if someone requests them in person, we just print them. I know that in the "before times" they would get put in a plastic card slip thing, but not laminated. I haven't seen anyone do that on site either.
